Connection to country

Respecting Cammeraigal Country

The College and its surrounding areas hold significant cultural importance as a sacred site for the Cammeraigal clan of the Gai-mariagal Nation. As a school, we feel a strong connection to this Country and are committed to actively reconciling with our First Nations people.

Protecting ancient First Nations culture and knowledge-sharing is imbued in the design. Connection to Country and natural rock shelters along the Lane Cove River inspired the Wingaru building design and landscaping.

Learning spaces are grouped around a gathering space. A central ‘pod’ hovers in the atrium, enabling students to learn, socialise and reflect.

Our new science and technology building provides an opportunity to accelerate learning while honouring this connection.

Elders and First Nations students have been instrumental in the discernment process to name this building Wingaru — “to think.” The name reflects our deep connection to Indigenous traditions, Jesuit values, and education. Wingaru allows us to live out our values within a new space, inspired by connection to Country.

First Nations symbolism is inherent in this building. Local Elders and First Nations students have been instrumental in the discernment process to name this building Wingaru — “to think.” We are driven by this spirit to look after each other and move forward with strength and passion, honouring each other. This is our opportunity to celebrate our First Nations and Jesuit traditions, and in doing so create learning environments for the future.”
